5 Interesting Facts About Somerset

Somerset is a huge, huge county and there’s plenty of things to tell you about it but here at Permaframe we’re going to list five of our favourite facts about Somerset.

1. The Home of Electric Street Lighting

As hard as this may be to believe, a town in Somerset called Taunton was the first town in the country to be permanently lit by electric street lighting in 1881.

2. The Willow Man

The Willow Man was designed and built by artist Serena de la Hey and it is a willow sculpture woven on to a steel frame and it is known as the ‘Angel of the South’. It stands at well over 40 feet and it was constructed to celebrate the roles of willow in the landscape of the Somerset Levels and Moors.

The structure was burnt down in 2001 and then rebuilt later that year along with a 130-foot circular moat built around the sculpture to guard against any further attacks.

3. Cider Apples

Cider has become one of the most popular alcoholic drinks in the country, being a summertime favourite and there are over 400 different varieties of apple grown in Somerset alone.

4. County Size

Having an area of 4,171 sq. km, Somerset is England’s 7th largest county by area but with a population of 508,000, it is only the 22nd biggest by population.

5. Glastonbury

What is now the largest performing arts festival in the world, Glastonbury was launched by dairy farmer, Michael Eavis in 1970 and he has had some of the biggest acts in the world grace his field like Oasis, The Smiths, David Bowie and U2.
