Gain A Taste Of India In The World’s Most Expensive House

Where would you presume the world’s most expensive house is situated? London, New York, Dubai, Shanghai, Tokyo? No, it can actually be found in the heart of Mumbai, the capital city formerly known as Bombay, and is worth an estimated $1-2 billion.

Called Antilia, the building is owned by the richest man in India, Mukesh Ambani, chairman of Reliance Industries, an Indian conglomerate holding company specialising in petrochemicals amongst many other things. He also owns the Mumbai Indians, one of the teams involved in the 20/20 Indian Premier League.

Completed in 2010, it contains 27 floors, though it actually spans as high as a 60-storey tower.

In total it offers 37,000 sqm of living space and includes three helipads on the roof, an air traffic control area, a swimming pool with spa and gym, outdoor gardens, an ice room, ballroom, yoga studio, a 50-seat cinema and six floors of parking space.

There’s also a very sizeable family residence but would you believe that one year on from the building being constructed and despite paying $500-700m to have it built, Mr Ambani and his family had yet to move into the property as they believed that it may cause them bad luck. Why? Because they were concerned that the building failed to conform with the ancient Indian architectural principles of vastu shastra, a variation of Feng Shui, due to a lack of windows on the east side facing up to the rising sun.

Over 600 members of staff are employed to look after the building which has been criticised by many quarters due to it sitting close to many nearby slum areas.
