What is considered a standard door size?
There’s no single, one‑size‑fits‑all “standard” door in the UK; instead, a handful of common sizes are widely stocked and specified.
In England and Wales, the go‑to internal width is 2’6” (30 inches / 762 mm), whereas in Scotland doors are often a touch narrower at about 28.5 inches (726 mm). What’s considered “standard” can also shift by installer and product range.

Standard Internal Door Sizes
Across the UK, internal door sizes still straddle both imperial and metric naming. A door labelled “2 ft 6” (you’ll often see this in older homes or supplier catalogues) is simply 762 mm in metric.
England and Wales commonly use 2’3”, 2’6” and 2’9”, while Scotland leans metric, especially in newer builds, where 2040 mm‑high doors are frequently chosen.

Standard External Front & Back Door Sizes
For external front and back doors, a dependable set of sizes makes replacements straightforward. Many start at 1981 mm tall, with widths from 610 mm up to 926 mm, which is ideal for most traditional openings and compatible with off‑the‑shelf frames.
A taller 2040 mm series is widely used in modern Scottish new‑builds and is gaining ground elsewhere for a more contemporary, loftier feel.

Door height, width and, crucially, slab thickness vary by material. Timber doors typically run 44–56 mm thick, composite options can span roughly 44–70 mm, and uPVC slabs are usually slimmer.
