An Introduction To Flush Casement Windows & Non-Flush Windows

In our product range we have a very eclectic mix of window products and it includes casement windows and flush casement windows.

They’re categorised individually as they are two contrasting window solutions, with the ‘flush’ being what differentiates them both.

To explain further, a ‘flush’ casement window is a flat window design because it has window sashes that sit perfectly flush against the window frame.

A non-flush casement window has window sashes that slightly overlap the window frame.

Seeing them both from side-on will highlight the difference.

The history of flush and non-flush casements

It was in the 19th century that flush casements were first developed and they were built from timber, as in those days, wood was the dominant window building material.

Homes of the Edwardian, Victorian and late Georgian periods with their original windows generally have timber flush casements.

Non-flush casements are older and have origins in the 18th century. Most contemporary non-flush designs are made from either UPVC or aluminium, but originally they were constructed using iron and done so by blacksmiths.

Why the sudden revival of flush windows?

Permaframe can claim some credit for that! Tastes have broadened and homeowners are now after windows that have an alternative aesthetic, which we reacted to by rolling out modern flush windows.

To ensure they have an authentic styling, we based the design of them on a traditional timber flush casement window. So, the lines and proportions are entirely accurate.

Called ‘Envisage’, they have a UPVC profile to make them an easy-care product.

Which will be right for my house style?

Flush UPVC windows are one of the few contemporary window designs that receive the approval of planners for installation into properties within conservation areas as they brilliantly mimic the appearance of traditional casements.

They are also chosen a lot for modern buildings due to their exceptional symmetry – Black and Anthracite Grey are the usual colour choices for these types of window installations.

Standard casement windows are Britain’s most popular style because of their versatility and how they can suit just about any home.
